HSfB Site News - 5 October 2008

  • Since HSfB was created in 2004, there have been many changes to UK health and safety legislation. This means that one or two of the freely available download materials on the site have become a little out-dated and need 'tweaked' in order to bring them back into line with the changes over the years. Although all of the materials on the site are taken 'as is', inaccuracies or not, a site audit has begun for the majority of materials available for download.
  • This task huge task has been taken on by a group of discussion forum volunteers - HSfB Audit Team. You can view the progress of the audit in the new dedicated forum section here - HSfB Site Audit.
  • The benefit to you is that our downloads stay as up-to-date as can be reasonably expected from a site with hundreds of contributors. Something which has never been done before on any site like ours!
  • If you would like to be part of the audit team, please have a read here for instructions.

  • You will now be able to keep up to date with the latest HS&E news articles through the www.healthandsafetyprofessional.co.uk RSS news feed on our home page. The RSS feed has up to the minute information and can be viewed in our 'Site News' box in the middle of the home page.
  • New industry specific networking discussion forum section created on our Health and Safety Discussion Forums
    • What is the Networking Forum?

      The Networking Forum section does what it says on the tin. You can network with other HS&E professionals in your industry sector using the various forum sections and by using the various user groups set up to help keep in touch with each other.

      Networking User Groups

      Each networking forum section will have a user group set up in which you can request to join. You can view all user groups from within your user control panel where you can request to join a user group of your choice. Video guides on how to do this will be created soon.

      Your request will be sent to the individual user group leader for approval and once they have approved your request, you will be added to the group.

      The beauty of the user groups is that people can see at a glance who on the forums works in the same industry, so you can private message or email each other with industry specific queries etc. You can also send a private message to an entire user group if you like.

      User Group Leaders

      Each user group will have a leader and where there is no leader, the forum administrator will be the default group leader until somebody requests they want to take leadership on.

      Can I suggest a new networking section and user group?

      Absolutely! If you would like to create a new user group and networking forum section, just let the forum administrator know and it will be added for you.

      You don't necessarily need to become the group leader if you request a new user group.

      Networking Moderators are volunteers who will moderate the networking forum section. They will not be full HSfB Moderators for the rest of the discussion forums, but they won't mind you asking for help if you get stuck anywhere along the line.

  • New downloads have been added to the Downloads pages.
  • Some of you may be experiencing some difficulty accessing the discussion forums at the moment. This may be causing your internet explorer to freeze and stop responding. There have been a few people comment on this recently and we can only apologise for the inconvenience caused.

    The reason for this issue is still unknown, but the support forums may have identified the issue as only affecting people who use Internet Explorer 5 or 6. Firefox users are not affected by this issue. So, if your work computers still use IE 5 or 6 (which they likely are), then you may experience this issue, but if you use IE7 or Firefox at home etc, then you should not experience this issue at all.

    Workaround

    There are two things to try to allow access to the forums.

    1. Access the forums from the link on the home page - http://www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk - http://www.hsfb.co.uk - rather than from a shortcut on your desktop or in your favourites folder.

    2. Access the forums using Firefox.

    These solutions are not ideal, but this issue is beyond our control at the moment. We will update you all on this issue as it progresses. You can also keep track of the issue on the phpBB3 support forum topic here - http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=936425&p=5503835#p5503835

HSfB Owner Runs the Edinburgh Marathon for CHAS - 16 March 2008

  • John Johnston, the owner of Health and Safety for Beginners and employee of FMC Technologies, will run the full Edinburgh Marathon on 25 May 2008 with two other colleagues from FMC Technologies - Alan and Sheena - in aid of The Children's Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS). The team building event, which is being backed by FMC Technologies, began in November 2007.

    Alan, Sheena and John form the HSE Group at FMC Technologies and are aiming to help raise awareness for healthy living for the 600 strong workforce as well as raise money for a worthy cause.

    CHAS is a Scottish charity established to provide hospice services in Scotland for children with life-limiting conditions. The hospice offers professional care, practical help and emotional support to the whole family from the day they are referred until the death of their child and beyond.
